Reflective writing (17/12/22)

Not having all the materials I needed definitely made things much harder but it forced me to learn more ways to emulate a certain object or texture using what I have around me. Following those videos, I also recently realised that a big part of how unrealistic fabric can look in small scale is due to the lack of gravity in that scale and so the fabric requires some sort of manipulating before being added to emulate the effect of gravity.

I also really understood the importance of researching since I found myself constantly having to look at references to make sure I communicated the right atmosphere for each piece I made. That being said, I'm still not really satisfied with the dining room side of the set; there's a clear difference between that and the coffee shop side but there isn't that regal feeling to it that I wanted. If I had more time I could add some cutlery and the various table additions that royal dining tables would have.

Nevertheless I think the subtlety between the two really makes it effective, because imagining myself in the space I can see how the two almost blend into each other, having the same wall and flooring but then noticing the difference in the furniture and patterns used.

Maybe if I had more time or developed this idea even more I would add more detail into the flooring and wall to make them more realistic. I would add more things on the walls and more smaller objects to really show the differences in the detail. I'm thinking also about going beyond the gingerbread man and just showing differences in space between time periods and again emphasising the differences in furniture and pattern - for a piece that would encourage viewers to think about what aspects of both spaces evoke specific feelings. To show the distinct theme of a coffee shop I think I'd also add coffee cups and increase space so I can add the counter.
